5G support for Edge Computing: 3GPP TSG SA WG2 publishes a new Technical Specification
The 3GPP Technical Specification Group Service and System Aspects (TSG SA) Working Group 2 (SA2) published on 24 September 2021 a new Technical Specification on “5G System Enhancements for Edge Computing”. TS 23.548, which was created for Release 17, defines the Stage 2 specifications for 5G System enhancements to support Edge Computing.
3GPP SA2 specified features to support Edge Computing in TS 23.501, TS 23.502 and TS 23.503 since Rel-15. Rel-17 enhances the 5G System support for Edge Computing (eEDGE) by introducing the dedicated TS 23.548 and updating the existing specifications.
TS 23.548 specifies features to support discovery of Edge Application Servers as topologically close as possible to the user device. Moreover, the new Technical Specification describes procedures to coordinate the change of the Edge Application Server with the modification of the 5G User Plane to ensure the fulfilment of application requirements such as minimizing packet loss or user plane latency.
TS 23.548 is available on the 3GPP Portal.
The freeze of Release 17 stage 2 is foreseen at the end of 2021.
